Buying a camper van: helping you to make your choice

Are you looking for a unique travel experience with plenty of freedom to make spontaneous decisions? And do you want it to be easy to find a parking space whenever you’re heading into town? If that’s the case, then a camper van or panel van is the perfect choice for you! But what are the things that need to be considered when buying a camper van? This guide will help you to find your perfect vehicle.

Flexibility on four wheels: the advantages of a camper van

A panel van is probably the most compact option for anyone looking for a holiday home on wheels. HYMER camper van models are built on tried-and-tested Fiat and Mercedes vans, the interior of which has been converted.

Externally, some of them have the same dimensions as a conventional car, and these are usually smaller than motorhomes. This often makes camper vans more manoeuvrable and flexible in traffic, making them the perfect companions on city trips. What’s more, the speed limits for a panel van with a gross vehicle weight of up to 3.5 tonnes are the same as those for a car, so you can often drive faster in a camper van than in a large motorhome.

Camper vans also use less fuel due to their smaller size. Highly manoeuvrable, they are usually cheaper to buy as well. And as an extra bonus, the cost of overnight stays at camping grounds is often lower if you arrive in a camper van.

HYMER camper vans are ideal for both inexperienced and experienced campers who have been enjoying the freedom of van life for many years already. Aside from solo travellers and couples, small families who are completely happy with having less space can also travel in comfort in camper vans, which can also be used as a daily runaround.

Insider tips from HYMER: To ensure that travelling in your camper van is always a carefree and pleasant experience, we recommend that you take a look at our expert tips on motorhome safety and motorhome cleaning.

Camper vans vs. motorhomes: what are the differences?

In the traditional sense, camper vans and panel vans count as motorhomes. According to the more accurate definition used by manufacturers, motorhomes are seen as the big brother of camper vans and panel vans. They are usually longer and, depending on the model, offer more storage space. When it comes to kitchen equipment or bathrooms, they are also usually more luxurious due to the greater space available.

By the way: If you’d prefer to sit behind the wheel of a motorhome, but prefer compact dimensions, you’ll find what you’re looking for in our categoried for lightweight motorhomes under 3500kg and small RVs.

Unlike camper vans or panel vans, which have the same external appearance as the Fiat Ducato or Mercedes Sprinter, motorhomes generally have a special design and their bodywork is unique. This is true of both Fiat and Mercedes motorhomes from HYMER. However, this doesn’t mean that the motorhome always comes out on top in the choice between a panel van and a motorhome!

When you buy a camper van, you’re buying a modern vehicle that transforms into a cosy temporary home on the road. A great night’s sleep, a space to relax in and enjoy, as well as the freedom to be here today and there tomorrow are the hallmarks of these models. Compared to camping in a tent or spending the night in an “urban vehicle”, a camper van really is far more comfortable. Especially if you also want a lot of flexibility, manoeuvrability and freedom in towns and cities.

A camper van also gives you lots of options in terms of features and design. You decide what goes inside your camper van: from the mobile two-room living area with pop-top roof to the incredible self-sufficiency package for nature lovers.

Good to know: Strictly speaking, there are some key differences between motorhomes! Class B+ RVs are hybrids consisting of the cab and bodywork. Conversely, Class A motorhomes are vehicles that have been entirely designed with travel in mind and feature a unique front end. Which camper van is right for me? Buyer’s guide and tips

Are you eager to start exploring the world with your own camper van? Then it’s high time you configured your perfect model with all the equipment you want! But what do you need to have in your camper van? The golden rule is to find the perfect balance between your needs and your budget!

Size and storage space are the most important considerations at the beginning. Although panel vans are built like vans externally, there are some significant differences. So ask yourself at the outset whether your vehicle needs four berths, or whether you’re looking for a camper van for two people, for example. A camper van with a pop-top roof will give you a little extra space. We like to compare this model with a two-room apartment. The extra space can be a huge advantage, especially when travelling with a dog or a small family. And when it comes to features, we have some good news for you.

Every HYMER camper van has a toilet and shower. This means you won’t have to miss out on a fully equipped bathroom. In addition, you can also add the optional extras of your choice to the kitchen or fit out your vehicle with equipment to make it even more self-sufficient and winter-proof.

Don’t forget: If you choose optional extras for your camper van, this will affect the weight of your vehicle. This can have an impact on its handling and fuel consumption. Our configurator will help you to make your choice with useful hints.

The base vehicle: which one is the right choice?

Mercedes camper vans

Mercedes has always been synonymous with innovation and quality. This makes the premium and versatile Mercedes Sprinter the perfect foundation for our camper vans. The Sprinter is highly reliable and a smooth ride, comes with a wide range of standard equipment and numerous assistance systems, as well as state-of-the-art comfort, multimedia and connectivity features.

Our Mercedes models:

Fiat camper vans

The Fiat Ducato is a real classic as the chassis for a camper van. It has been tried and tested over many years. The technical features leave nothing to be desired and fulfil all the requirements where comfort, safety, performance and technology are concerned, and much more besides.

Our Fiat models:

When choosing your vehicle, you should also not forget the issue of self-sufficiency, i.e. the times when you will be on the road and independent of an external power and water supply. It’s possible to extend this period even further by selecting suitable optional extras, such as a self-sufficiency package, a HYMER Smart Battery System or a solar installation. These will ensure that you’re able to enjoy a relaxing time surrounded by nature, far away from all the hustle and bustle. If you like travelling off the beaten track, it may also be worth taking a look at our all-wheel drive motorhomes and camper vans.

Our tip: The HYMER Grand Canyon S CrossOver special edition model is an all-wheel-drive camper van (with 4x4 drive) that can be self-sufficient for up to ten days.

Do you love the snow and want to travel with your camper van in winter? If you do, then it’s important that you buy a winter-proof motorhome. Our HYMER Fiat camper vans are already winter-proof as standard, while all other camper van models are suitable for use in winter and can also be made winter-proof by selecting the appropriate optional extras.
